Bellingham Town Hall

The town hall opened in 1862, with the money raised through selling shares, concert parties and public subscriptions.

The wooden clock tower was erected by the four graynes, or major families of the North Tyne - the Armstrongs, Charltons, Dodds and Milburns.

The building was Grade II listed on 7th March 1985.

Town Hall. Late C19. Dressed stone. Wooden clock tower. Welsh slate and lead roofs. One tall storey with basements to rear. 7 bays. Central doorway with original panelled door in frame of Tuscan pilasters and plain frieze and cornice. Above a tapered stone tablet with rounded top bearing shield with town coat of arms. Tall 2-light sash windows. Right bay converted into door. Gabled roof with kneelers, ridged coping and diagonally-set stone corniced gable stack. Above door is a clock-turret set forward from wall and breaking eaves, supported on 2 wooden struts. It is capped by lead spire with cross-gablets and 4 corner spirelets.

Included for group value and historical interest.

The Town Hall used to house the village cinema, and Geordie pop group The Animals debuted their massive hit "The House of the Rising Sun" here in 1964.
