The bench and floral display opposite the old Police Station were installed in memory of former Bellingham Community Police Officer Joe Carroll.

PC Carroll was killed on April 13, 2006, aged 46, when his vehicle overturned on the A69 near Corbridge after the prisoner he was transporting to Newcastle suddenly pulled on the handbrake.

PC Carroll lived in West Woodburn with his wife Caroline and had worked as a community officer, serving the people of Bellingham and the surrounding areas for 13 years.
